In our modern society, healthcare and development are closely linked, and effective community participation in development activities plays a key role in achieving desired objectives. Poor people in India spend about 60% of their annual income and a majority resort to borrowing or selling assets to cover these expenses that force them down the poverty ladder. India’s 134th rank in the Human Development Index speaks volumes of the distance we need to cover. About 1.5 million Indian children under the age of 5 died due to diarrhea in 2009. About 1 million Indians die yearly due to preventable diseases. Hence, it is high time the voluntary organizations in the country take up adequate measures to ensure health care services are provided to all. “Health for All” should be the motto of health care organizations. With this inspiration in mind, VOICE TRUST was registered as a Trust under Indian Trust Act in 1997.
“Education is the attainment of fullest natural growth of the individual leading to balanced, harmonious, useful and natural life.” - Rousseau Education is an important instrument to bring social revolution among all the instruments education is considered as the most powerful. Education for all, at all levels, and at all ages is the only remedy to bring about the desired social change in Indian society. The relationship between education and social change takes a dual form-education as an instrument and education as a product. This implies that education as an instrument is used as a means for bringing about desired changes in the society and in the later case changes in the educational structure follows as a consequence of changes which have already taken place in the society.
Historical experience of advanced countries has shown that for any social revolution education is the pre-condition. Illiterates remain satisfied with their existing conditions and feel that they are destined to be what they are. They never bother to exert to bring change in their present social and economic conditions. They are guided by orthodoxy, traditions and fate rather than by rationality in their actions. Education helps people to make them rational in their thinking and approach. There is inter-dependent relationship between education and social change. On the one hand it brings change in social conditions.
Education follows social change. It has its place before and after social change First come social changes and then teaching process is changed according to those social changes. Education system changes according to the needs of society Education as an instrument of social change means how education helps people to bring social change. Education changes the outlook and the tradition approach towards social and economic problems. It sharpens the skills and knowledge of the children. Technical education helps in the process of industrialization which results in vast changes in society. Education not only preserves the cultural traditions i.e., customs, traditions and values etc. of the society but also transmits them to the next generation. It also motivates the people to adopt new pattern in order to remain dynamic and forward looking. Education fulfils the needs of the society and propagates such ideas which promote social changes in all fields of life.
With these tenets in place the VOICE Trust Charter provides the needed space, scope and the resources for education to play its due and significant role in all the trust activities and projects. Be it health, eye care, road safety, skill building, rural sanitation, women empowerment or poverty alleviation, Education of the masses and the target population through appropriate media has always been of pivotal significance in all the project proposals and the executions of VOICE TRUST Madurai.
Voice Trust believes that the message on road safety has to be taken to the people only through regular programmes; hence these programmes have been conducted throughout the year with the help of the Madurai city police. The Madurai district administration has played a main role our road safety programmes, which would not have been possible without the help of our main sponsor for the events Kalyani Honda. Madurai district collector Anshul Mishra inaugurated an exhibition on road safety on October 18, 2012 and flagged off a rally. Minister Sellur K Raju participated in the road safety and driving sensitization programme for two wheeler drivers on January 5, 2013 to name a few. General public are also targeted in the road safety programmes of Voice trust, last year 343 residents of Vasudhara Apartment, 53 staff members from Madurai Kidney centre and road users in busy junctions like Goripalayam and Race course were informed on the importance of road safety.
